How to edit the RailClone style
Presets in the library can be easily modified and adjusted to create your own styles.By adjusting rule sets and editing and even replacing source geometry, library presets are a springboard for creating your own styles and gaining a deeper understanding of how RailClone works.
Reverse engineering presets are a great way to learn how to build a new rule set and create source geometry for RailClone.We strongly recommend that you take some time to check the node tree for a series of presets to uncover the mystery of how it works.
For example, let's take a look at the presets that the stadium library looks complicated:
Start a new scene and draw a spline about 12 meters long.
Create a new RailClone object, select and load from the library > Architecture > Stadium > Stands > Metal Blender 3SR Preset.(Lite users can choose MetallicBleachers3. Styles use fewer segments, but many of the same principles will apply)Top: Metal Bleach 3SR (Professional Edition only) Bottom: Metal Bleach 3 (Lite User)
From the Base Objects rollout, click Spline and select the path you created in step 1.Now you will see the bleacher shown below.
At first glance, this looks like a complicated style.To learn more about how it works, you can check the rule set.To do this, go to the Styles rollout and click to open the Style Editor.
The style editor will open, showing the node tree of the style.You can see that this rule set is actually very simple.
By examining this structure, we can get some information about this style and how RailClone uses these nodes to create rule sets.
a. Preset to use a single linear generator.The generator creates a one-dimensional array using length measurements or splines as paths.
b. Predetermine the use of splines to determine the path of the 1D array.To use a spline, you must connect the Path object to the Spline input of the generator.
c. The preset segment is attached to the default input.As the name implies, this geometry is used by default unless the rule set specifies that geometry from one of the other inputs should be used (as we will see next).
d. Pre-set a segment that is connected to the start input.The geometry in the start input will be used once at the beginning of the spline.
e. The preset segment is attached to the End input.The geometry in the final input will be used once at the end of the spline.
f. Preset without corners or even input.This preset applies to straight or curved splines, not splines with hard turns.
g. Preset to use sequence operators in the default input.The operators allow you to manipulate the segments, which we will discuss in more detail in Chapter 11.But by looking at the style, you can infer that the sequence operator used here creates a repeating pattern in the array by repeating the two segments in input 1, and then enters the segment in 2.To see the number of times the sequence operator repeats, click on the node and check the count value found in the PropertiesEditor.
h. Preset to use the Compose operator in the End input.The Compose operator allows you to combine segments, which is useful for adding multiple segments to inputs that are typically set to only one input (such as Start, End, Corner, or Evenly).
i. This style uses 5 segments.Each segment node represents the geometry added to the array and repeated in the array.To fully understand how a rule set builds an RC object, it is helpful to be able to see the geometry in which it is constructed.In the library style, the geometry is no longer in the scene, but is stored in the RailClone object itself.You can view this by clicking on the Segment node and going to Properties. If the geometry is stored in an RC object, Embedded will be displayed instead of the object's name.
In the next section, we'll show you how to put the geometry back into the scene to check, edit, and replace it.
Extraction geometry
Once the geometry is assigned to the Segment, the original object can be deleted, and as we can see, the RailClone object internally stores a copy of the grid.However, to edit the geometry and adjust the style, you may need to extract this object back into the scene.To extract the geometry of the Bleachers style, follow these steps.
In the style editor, select one of the 5 Segment nodes.
Click the toolbar or go to 'Split' > 'Extract' from the menu.
The source object of the Segment will be created in the scene with its original coordinates.
Do the same for the remaining 4 segments.
You can now see the 5 clips that make up the style.Understanding how geometry and rule sets work together is key to mastering the RailClone workflow.In this example, you can see the railing startup array.The default part of the array, between the start and end, uses the Sequence operator to create a repeating seat and step mode (note the support legs on the left side of the two segments).To complete the array, we repeat the railing used at the beginning, but before we need another set of legs, the two components are combined using the Compose operator.
Using RailClone is a bit like creating jigsaw pieces and then providing detailed instructions on how they overlap.Let's try another example.
